Cubchoo Amigurumi Pattern
Cubchoo is such an adorable character despite the snot and I really wanted to make one as soon as I saw it. However, it’s not my favourite in my giant pile of Pokémon amigurumis… Let me explain why...
The yarn that I normally use for my amigurumis doesn’t really carry the exact colours to match the character, so it was difficult to pick. After a few trials I settled on the ones I’ve listed further down in this post.
I finally got to use one of the safety noses I’ve hoarded for a long time. I think I bought it on my trip to Japan all the way back in 2014. This proved to be a bit of a challenge too. The metal washer that came with it was huge, so I had to bend it to be able to fit it onto the muzzle and still be able to sew the piece onto the face.
And don’t get me started on the eyes... I have oval safety eyes in my stash, but I didn’t feel like they were oval enough to replicate Cubchoo’s eyes. I decided that I was going to needle felt the eyes instead. Needle felting is a great way of creating details, but I just don’t enjoy it. After probably about a year of putting this off I decided that I should just cut out some felt and be done with it.
So, over all there were just a bunch of little hurdles that made the making of this amigurumi a little less enjoyable than usual...
Hopefully you can find some enjoyment in making one, so let’s get started!
YARN & HOOK
2mm hook
Stylecraft Special DK in Duck Egg, Cloud Blue, Sherbert and White
Black and White felt
Black safety nose
Polyester toy filling
Pins to place pieces before sewing together
Darning needle
Stitch markers (I prefer using scrap yarn as “stitch markers”)
Cutting out the felt for the eyes was a little bit tricky, as the pieces are so small. So… if you do have any oval safety eyes consider using these instead. Or even needle felting.
STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS – UK ENGLISH
ch chain
dc double crochet
sl st slip stitch
st/sts stitch/es
inc dc 2 in one st
dec decrease; insert hook in the front loop of the next two sts, yarn over, pull through both loops, y.o. and pull through remaining two loops –> one dc placed into two sts
SIZE & ASSEMBLY
Cubchoo is approximately 9cm tall, and 4cm from shoulder to shoulder, and approximately 6cm from tip of his tail to the tip of his nose. Weight: 27grams (this includes all materials used to make Cubchoo)
I would recommend assembling Cubchoo in the same order that the pattern it is written, but whatever works for you! Pin all the pieces in place before sewing to make sure it looks right, including the felt pieces. Once all the crocheted pieces are attached use fabric glue to attach the felt pieces.
THE PATTERN
HEAD & BODY
Yarn: Duck Egg & White
The head and body are worked top down in one piece. Starting with Duck Egg:
Round 1: dc 6 in Magic Ring (6)
R2: inc in all sts around (12)
R3: 12
R4: (inc x 3, dc 3) x 2 (18)
R5: (dc, inc) x 3, dc 3, (dc, inc) x 3, dc 3 (24)
The increases in the above two sections should be the side of the head
R6: (dc 3, inc) x 6 (30)
R7: dc 30
R8: (dc 2, inc, dc 2) x 6 (36)
R9-10: dc 36
R11: (dc 5, inc) x 6 (42)
R12-13: dc 42
R14: (dc 5, dec) x 6 (36)
R15: (dc 2, dec, dc 2) x 6 (30)
R16: (dc 3, dec) x 6 (24)
R17: (dc 2, dec) x 6 (18)
R16: working in the front loops only to create the collar: (sl st, 4 tr in the next st, sl st) x 6.
Fasten off and weave in the loose end, and stuff the head.
Optional – if you have chosen to use safety eyes instead of felt, you may want to create the muzzle/nose piece before continuing with the body so that you can work out where to place the safety eyes.
All in the unworked back loops of the previous round, start by attaching the white yarn and continue as follows:
R18: (dc 2, inc) x 6 (24)
R19-21: dc 24
R22: (dc 3, inc) x 6 (30)
R23-28: dc 30
R29: (dc, dec) x 10 (20)
R30: (dc 2, dec) x 5 (15)
R31: (dc, dec) x 5 (10)
Fasten off. Weave in loose end by inserting darning needle in the front loop of each st and pull tight to close the hole.
NOSE & MUZZLE
Yarn: Cloud Blue
Round 1: dc 5 in Magic Ring (5)
If you’re using a safety nose, make sure you can fit this in the magic loop before closing to tightly. Don’t place the washer until you’ve finished the crocheted piece.
My safety nose had an unusually large metal washer which was incredibly inconvenient. I had to somehow fold the metal piece on the edges so that I was able to sew the piece onto the face.
R2: inc in each of the next two sts, dc 3 into the next st, and inc in each of the last two sts of the round (11)
R3: (inc, dc) x 2, dc, dc 3 into the next st, dc, (dc, inc) x 2 (17)
R4: dc 2, inc, dc 5, dc 3 in the next st, dc 5, inc, dc 2 (21)
R5: dc 3, and leave the rest of the round unworked
Fasten off and leave long end to attach the nose onto the head.
EARS
Yarn: Duck Egg
Make 2
Round 1: dc 5 in Magic Ring (5)
R2: inc in all sts around (10)
R3: (dc, inc) x 5 (15)
R4-5: dc 15
R6: (dc, dec) x 5 (10)
Fasten off and leave a long end to sew the ears onto the head.
SNOT
Yarn: Duck Egg and Sherbert
Starting with Duck Egg
Round 1: dc 4 in Magic Ring (4)
R2: inc in all sts around (8)
R3: (inc, dc 3) x 2 (10)
R4: dc 10
change to Sherbert
R5: dc 10
R6: (dec, dc 3) x 2 (8)
R7: (dec, dc 2) x 2 (6)
R8: (dec, dc ) x 2 (4)
R9-12: dc 4
Fasten off and leave a long end to sew the droplet onto the bottom of Cubchoo’s nose.
ARMS
Yarn: White

ch3 – we will be working around the chains to create an oval shape:
Round 1: dc into the second chain from hook, increase in the next stitch. Continue on the other side of the row of chains, dc in the first loop, and inc in the last loop (6)
R2: (inc x 2, dc) x 2 (10)
R3-4: dc 10
R5: (dc 3, dec) x 2 (8)
R6-7: dc 8
R8: (dc 2, dec) x 2 (6)
R9-11: dc 6
Fasten off and leave a long end to sew the arm onto the body. Before cutting the yarn use it to attach the hands to the snot.
LEGS
Yarn: White
Make 2
Round 1: dc 5 in Magic Ring (5)
R2: inc in all sts around (10)
R3: in the back loops only: dc 10
R4: dc 10
R5: dc 5, dc 5 in the back loops only (10)
R6: dc 5, dc 5 of the unworked front loops of the previous round

Fasten off and leave a long end to sew the legs onto the body.
TAIL
Yarn: White
Round 1: dc 5 in Magic Ring (5)
R2: inc in all sts around (10)
R3-5: dc 10
R6: dec x 3 (3)
Fasten off and leave a long end to sew the tail onto the body.
EYES & FELT PIECES
Cut out two small oval pieces of black felt, and two smaller pieces of white felt to create the eyes. Glue these onto either side of the nose.
I’ve also cut out a small piece of white felt and attached it to the snot, just to create a bit of “shine”.
