YARN & HOOK
2mm hook
Stylecraft Special DK in Jaffa and Citron
6mm black safety eyes
Fibres in Orange for needle felting*
Needle felting tool*
Polyester toy filling
Yellow Pipe cleaner (approx. 30cm long)
Pins to place pieces before sewing together
Darning needle
Stitch markers (I prefer using scrap yarn as “stitch markers”)
* Please note that I have used needle felting to create the flame on the head piece. Needle felting is still quite new to me so I will not be including instructions on how to do this. You may want to look into alternative ways of creating this.
SIZE
Torchic is approximately 9cm tall, and 4.2cm in width, and approximately 4.5cm from front to back.Weight: 20grams (this includes all materials used to make Torchic)
STITCHES & ABBREVIATIONS – UK ENGLISH
ch chain
dc double crochet
htr half treble
sl st slip stitch
st/sts stitch/es
inc dc 2 in one st
dec decrease; insert hook in the front loop of the next two sts, yarn over, pull through both loops, y.o. and pull through remaining two loops –> one dc placed into two sts
ASSEMBLY
Assemble in the same order the pattern is written. I would recommend using a photo of Torchic as reference for best possible outcome. Pin all the pieces in place before sewing to make sure it looks right, including the felt pieces - Once all the crocheted pieces are attached use fabric glue to attach the felt pieces.
THE PATTERN
HEAD & BODY
Torchic’s head and body will be worked in one piece – top down
Yarn: Jaffa
Round 1: dc 6 in Magic Ring (6)
R2: Inc in all sts around (12)
R3: (dc, inc) x 6 (18)
R4: (dc 2, inc) x 6 (24)
R5: dc 24
R6: (dc 3, inc) x 6 (30)
R7-10: dc 30
R11: (dc 3, dec) x 6 (24)
R12: (dc 2, dec) x 6 (18)
Place the first safety eye in R9 in st number 11, and the second eye in st number 18. Once fastened start stuffing the head
R13: (dc, dec) x 6 (12)
Continue with the body without fastening off:
R14: in the front loops only: (dc, inc) x 6 (18)
R15: (dc 2, inc) x 6 (24)
R16-17: dc 24
R18: (dc 2, dec) x 6 (18)

Fasten off. Weave in loose end by inserting darning needle in the front loop of each st and pull tight to close the hole.
BEAK
Yarn: Citron
Ch 4 – we will be working around the chains to create an oval shape
Round 1: inc in the second ch from hook, 2htr in the next ch, and inc in the next ch, dc the first ch loop on the other side, and the next two chs
R2: dc 2, 2htr, dc 2 (leave the other side unworked)
Fasten off and leave a long end to sew the piece onto Torchic’s face.
FEATHERS - COLLAR PIECE
Yarn: Citron
Ch 23
Row 1: htr in the third ch from hook, *ch 3, htr in the next two chs. Repeat from * to the end of the chain row.Fasten off and leave a long end to sew the piece around Torchic’s neck.
FEATHERS – HEAD PIECE
Torchic’s head piece is made out of three pieces – two small ones and a bigger one – which are crocheted together
Yarn: Citron
SMALL SIZE – [side piece 1] & [side piece 2]
Make two
Round 1: dc 4 in Magic Ring (4)
R2: (inc, dc) x 2 (6)
R3: dc 6
Fasten off
BIGGER SIZE – [middle piece]
Make one
Round 1: dc 4 in Magic Ring (4)
R2: (inc, dc) x 2 (6)
R3: (inc, dc 2) x 2 (8)
R4-5: dc8
R6: (inc, dc 3) x 2 (10)
Do not fasten off yet – we are now going to join the two side pieces to the bigger one:
R7: to attach the first side piece: dc 2 in [side piece 1], dec, dc 2, now continue working in the [middle piece]: dec, dc, dec, continue to attach [side piece 2]: dc 2, dec, dc 2. And continue working on the [middle piece] again: dec, dc, dec (16)
All three pieces will are now shaped into one piece.
R8: (dc 4, dec 2) x 2 (12)
Fasten off and leave a long end to sew the piece onto body. Weave in any loose ends.
Once sewn onto body use orange fibre and needlefelt the flame shaped piece in the middle of the head piece.
FEET
Insert the yellow pipe cleaner at the botton of Torchic’s body and pull half way through. Shape the feet on both sides.
